CHAPTER SIX

Selma, Alabama

March 7, 1965

Sunday, 1:00 p.m.

The sight of the dog sent chills down my back. It stood still with its hind legs parted in the shape of an upside-down V. It continued growling.

Ready to charge at me instantly, it started barking. Its loud barking and fierce-looking eyes made all the hair on my body stand on end. And then I did something shocking and shameful: I wet myself.

I didn’t have time to be embarrassed, though. In the next moment, the German shepherd charged at me. I quickly grabbed my school bag and used it as a shield to cover my face. Like the Statue of Liberty, I stood completely still.

Please God, I prayed, please don’t let that dog bite my face and leave ugly scars or tear into my leg or my arm and leave me permanently handicapped. Please!

An eternity seemed to pass while I stood there. Finally peeking over the top of my school bag, I saw that a man had stepped in between the dog and me. He used a jacket to distract the angry German shepherd and yelled curses at the dog.

The dog kept charging at the man like an angry bull. The man waved his jacket around like a bullfighter waves his cape. After several rounds, the dog finally gave up and ran away. The man turned to me and yelled, “Go back to the church!”
